Priestess of Delphi, 1891

John Collier

Holding a sprig of laurel (symbol/plant/tree of Apollo, god of prophecy) and sitting on the tripod, the Oracle breathes in the vapors emitting from the fissure in the mountain, believed to be the spirit of the Oracle, which then uses the body of the young virgin Oracle to issue its prophecies.

Recent studies have proven that there was actually once a fissure on Mt. Parnassus, under the Temple of Apollo, where the Oracle sat on her tripod. When the fumes that emitted from it were inhaled, they caused an hallucinogenic state, said to be the trance of the spirit of the Oracle.
